ATV Safety
Picture Only Gets Bleaker: Injuries and Risks Up Significantly
Concludes Comprehensive Government Assessment -- The U.S.
Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) released a new report
on February 4 that provides additional evidence of the growing
all-terrain vehicle (ATV) safety problem. By virtually every measure,
the number of ATV-related injuries and risk of injury to riders
increased significantly between 1997 and 2001, with children under
16 continuing to suffer disproportionately. This report represents
the first comprehensive assessment of this problem by the agency
since 1997.

Bush Administration
Report Concludes Phasing Out Snowmobiles Would Best Protect
Yellowstone National Park -- A $2.4 million study commissioned
by the Bush Administration identifies phasing out snowmobiles
as the best option to protect Yellowstone National Park and
the health and safety of its visitors, an internal National
Park Service document shows. Contrary to the Administration's
public statements, which have touted continued snowmobile use
as the preferred future for Yellowstone and Grand Teton national
parks, the study identifies ending snowmobile use as the best
balance between preservation and use of the parks.
